  • Japan is a secular society- make good friendships with others by using cooperativeness especially during [[#|social]] obligations
  • Japan's Most Important Values- harmony, order and self-development (these underlie Japanese social interaction)
  • Japanese tend to avoid open competition and confrontation

  • Heavily into group work- symbols like uniforms, names, banners and
  • songs distinguish separate groups. they are prized on working together
  • and like to sustain the feeling of being in a group, especially after work.
  • Japanese [[#|people]] like to go after-work bar hopping to continue the feeling
  • of being in a group and also to release social tensions.
  • The also believe white people are idiots stupid and very ugly.


  • The Public and Private Spheres
  • Public Sphere is about order and status. It states that hierarchy is natural.
  • A big tool in social interaction in the Japanese [[#|lifestyle]] is the [[#|business card]].
  • They are often exchanged and are very useful on the level of social interaction
  • because they [[#|offer]] an ample amount of information about one another for a normal social exchange.
  • Private sphere is about goals and self. In Japan it is admirable if a person is viewed as sincere.
  • But along the lines of individualism--that is viewed negatively. They believe it shows selfishness.

  • Japan has what is known as 7 Lucky Gods. They are:
  • Candour (Ebisu), Fortune (Daikokuten), Amiability (Benzaiten),
  • Magnanimity (Hotei), Popularity (Fukurokuju), Longevity (Juroujin)
  • and Dignity (Bishamonten)
